Hoeryongsa stands in a northern Dobongsan valley and carries stories linking Taejo and the monk Muhak to the king’s return. Those stories, the temple’s institutional history and the dates of surviving objects are different evidence. Fires, rebuilding and repair mean the present halls are not an intact founding-period complex. The temple remains a place of worship maintained by monastic and lay work, not merely a hikers’ rest stop. Check heritage records object by object, respect services and photography rules, and prepare for the uphill trail from Hoeryong Station. Weather, trail closures and sunset matter more than the short distance shown on a flat map.
