The former Wonju branch of Joseon Siksan Bank, built in 1934, survives on Jungang-ro as Registered Cultural Heritage. Its solid facade belonged to a colonial-era financial institution. Admiring the architecture alone can hide the bank’s role in colonial economic policy.
It was not simply an ordinary commercial bank
Joseon Siksan Bank financed industry, but it was also a special-purpose institution tied to colonial administration. Avoid both celebrating it as neutral modernization and using one building to explain the entire economy.
Finance continued after liberation
The premises remained in financial use under different institutions. Practical reuse, as well as heritage awareness, helped the building survive.

Nearby markets traded goods; the bank handled money, collateral, and credit. Do not obstruct current users for photographs or assume nonpublic interiors are visitor spaces.
