Every year on the third day of the first lunar month, the village of Daeri on Wido Island holds the Wondangje ritual. This community rite, praying for a bountiful catch and the village's peace, is also called Ttibaennori because a straw boat is set afloat during the Dragon King ritual at the shore. It was designated a National Intangible Cultural Heritage on February 1, 1985.
Before the state ever designated this ritual, the people of Daeri had already won the President's Award, the highest honor, at the 1978 National Folk Arts Competition. Official recognition arrived late; long before it came, this village had already been keeping the ritual alive across generations. On an island rather than the mainland, the villagers' prayers toward the sea have continued this way for a very long time.
