Chaeseokgang is a sea cliff shaped by sedimentary layers that look as though books have been stacked one atop another, containing folds, faults, and sea caves among its varied geologic features. Jeokbyeokgang is known for its strangely shaped rock formations, created where rhyolite covered a layer of dark shale. Both sites were designated Korea's Scenic Site No. 13 on November 17, 2004.
The time it took for these cliffs to take their present form is almost impossible to measure against human history. Hundreds of millions of years of sedimentation, tectonic shifts, and long erosion have all been carved into this rock face. The scenic-site designation was a belated, but fitting, act of recognition for that immense span of time.
