Gwangmyeong KTX Station opened in 2004 as a high-speed rail gateway southwest of Seoul. Its vast steel roof, glass walls and underground platforms arrived before the surrounding district became a complete urban center. Shopping, housing, hotels and offices followed over years.
Fast trains do not guarantee fast transfers
The city lists a building area of 48,184 square meters. East and west exits separate buses, taxis, parking and commercial flows. Gwangmyeong KTX Station and Gwangmyeongsageori Station on Line 7 are not one walkable interchange; the older centers of Cheolsan and Gwangmyeong-dong also require road transit.
Large parcels changed the destination
Big-box retail and malls turned Iljik-dong into a place people visit without taking a train. The same wide roads and parking entrances can make a short map distance a long walk. Calculate hotel-to-station travel and transfer time separately from the KTX journey.
Check the station name, train number, platform and current timetable through Korail. Travelers with luggage should locate elevators and the correct exit early. Watching arriving passengers divide toward buses, airport links and shops explains the station better than its roof alone: high-speed infrastructure can be built quickly, while the city around it takes much longer to catch up.
